Visual Arts

In Visual Arts we have been paying our respect to the traditional custodians of our land, the Gunaikurnai people, and learning about their artwork. Students have learnt that when looking Aboriginal art we need to first acknowledge where the work comes from, listen to the language from the Country, look at where it is on the Australian map and hear their creation stories.

Gunaikurnai people's style of artworks is shields and they create these by using line work to make their designs. This term we created a personal shield. We started by exploring shapes and designed a shape that resonated with us. Each of our shields has a unique shape designed and created by us. Next we worked on the border of the shield and how we could use line and shape to create a border that would make our shield really stand out. Finally, we thought about a significant event or moment in our lives and used symbolism to create an image of this.

Here are some images of our completed shields.
